LIGHT CURE UNITS:

The increase in the number of patients seeking more esthetic restorative treatments. This has led to a sharp increase in composite resin restorations compared to the amalgam restorations that were quite common in the olden days. In a day when composite resin restorations have probably replaced the use of amalgam as a restorative material, there is a necessity for stronger bonding properties of composite resins. Research into this matter had let to various techniques to improve the  bond strength at the tooth-restoration interface. In addition to improvements made in the bonding agents, light cure units have been improved to ensure adequate polymerization of the composite resin material. The factors such as intensity of the light, exposure time and wavelength as related to the type of photoinitiator used in the composite resin material, affect the rate and depth of polymerization. Few studies have concluded that almost 37% of composite restorations are insufficiently polymerized, owing to a lower intensity of light from the light cure unit. Thus, there is a need for high-quality curing units to enhance the overall restoration.
Three international studies were conducted to measure the intensities of light cure units used by dentists. It was concluded that about 33% to 48% of the lights used in clinics were found to use light curing units with intensities lesser than 300mW/cm2.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIGHT CURING UNITS?

Light curing units used in dentistry can be classified as:
  • Quartz Tungsten Halogen (QTH) Lights
  • Plasma Arc Lights
  • Argon Laser Lights
  • Light-Emission Diode (LED) Lights

QUARTZ TUNGSTEN HALOGEN (QTH) LIGHTS:

The QTH lights contain an incandescent lamp containing a tungsten filament. The tungsten filament is placed in the lamp hoarding an inert gas and a small amount of halogen. Electric current results in the filament heating up to 2727oC. This creates visible light and infrared radiation, which when absorbed by the composite resin results in great molecular vibration and heat generation.  The light is filtered to around 390nm to 500nm, capable of curing all composites. However, the challenge is that only 9% of the total energy is used.

PLASMA ARC LIGHTS:

Plasma arc curing lights have an aluminum oxide high-pressure bulb, containing pressurized xenon gas under 150 psi. These units have an inside shape which is specified to reflect the light between two electrodes and a 1mm long arc which enables a very focused beam. The limitations include emission of infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Plasma Arc Lights are expensive and might not cure all photoinitiators.

ARGON LASER LIGHTS:

Argon laser lights generate light when energy is applied to an atom, which raises an electron to a higher and unstable energy level. The electron returns to its stable level and releases light through a medium of argon gas. These lights containing large and have base units are not portable. Small tip sizes necessitate multiple curing cycles. Fast curing cycles cause a large increase in temperature and a considerable amount of shrinkage, which may lead to postoperative sensitivity.

LIGHT EMISSION DIODE (LED) LIGHTS:

The application of LED lights in the polymerization of composite resins was an advancement in dentistry. These lights have gone through multiple generations. The first generation of LED light curing lights had a narrow spectrum of emission. They could only activate camphorquinone and no other photo-initiators. Moreover, they could not completely polymerize certain composite materials. Their power and energy output is low, made longer curing times necessary. Having a small footprint, the light tips had an insufficient continuous operation before shutdown. The subsequent generation of LED light cure units, however, had a higher photon energy output. The limitation here is the one color chip with a narrow emission spectrum which does not cure all composites.
